Foreword Writing this grammar book has been a long process, but also a challenging and enriching one. It has demanded careful considerations about underlying didactic and linguistic approaches to the English language, as well as to the overall structure of the book - where to begin and where to end, because so many topics are interwoven. These considerations have resulted in many rewarding discussions that have clarified and enriched our own understanding of the English language and how to teach it. The project actually started as two separate projects, which involved our colleagues Louise Otzen and Elsebeth Hurup. However, they decided not to continue with the project, after which the present authors joined forces and trotted on together. In 2010 we were awarded the Special Course Book Award (“Lærebogsprisen”) by the publishing house Samfundslitteratur. We are very grateful for the recognition the publishing house showed us, by presenting us with the award, of our underlying ideas for this project, and receiving it gave us fresh impetus to finish. While writing the book, we have used the manuscript with many students in the teacher training programmes in Haderslev, Århus and Aalborg as guinea pigs. We are very grateful for their irreplaceable feedback and helpful advice, not to mention their patience with working with a teaching material still in progress. The final stepping-stone in the long process has been Hannah Dunlop from the University of East Anglia who has proofread the manuscript carefully, for which we want to thank her. We also want to thank our families who have become very familiar with the response, “No, not right now, Mum has to work on her grammar book.” We hope that our colleagues will find the book useful and that you will send us your comments and ideas for more activities. skanderborg, 2012 Karen Lassen Bruntt Aalborg, 2012 Ulla Bryanne
